How to Be a Good Dive Buddy

Being a good dive buddy is essential for the safety and enjoyment of everyone involved. One of the most important aspects of being a good dive buddy is communication. Before the dive, it’s crucial to discuss the dive plan, including entry and exit points, maximum depth, and any potential hazards. During the dive, maintaining visual contact with your buddy and regularly checking on each other’s air supply and well-being is crucial. Additionally, being prepared with the necessary equipment and being aware of your surroundings can make a significant difference in the overall dive experience. Remember, being a good dive buddy is not only about looking out for your buddy’s safety, but also about enjoying the underwater world together.

1. Constant Communication

Communication is key when it comes to diving. As a dive buddy, it’s crucial to maintain constant communication with your partner. Ensure that you both have a clear understanding of hand signals and can easily communicate underwater. This will help in maintaining safety and enhancing the overall diving experience.

2. Be Aware of Your Buddy’s Well-being

Always keep an eye on your buddy and be aware of their well-being throughout the dive. Check on their air supply, body language, and overall comfort. Being attentive to your buddy’s needs and signals will contribute to a safer and more enjoyable dive.

3. Plan Dive Objectives Together

Collaborate with your dive buddy to plan the objectives of the dive. Discuss the intended route, depth, and any specific points of interest to ensure that you are both on the same page. This will help in maximising the experience for both of you and avoiding any misunderstandings during the dive.

4. Offer Assistance When Needed

Be ready to offer assistance to your dive buddy if they encounter any issues during the dive. Whether it’s helping with equipment adjustments, managing buoyancy, or providing support in case of anxiety, being prepared to lend a hand will strengthen the bond between you and your buddy.
Remember, being a great dive buddy means prioritising safety, clear communication, and mutual support throughout the underwater adventure.

I’m a certified PADI Divemaster with over a decade of diving experience, much of it spent exploring Indonesia’s world-renowned waters, from the rich marine diversity of Raja Ampat to the current swept reefs of Komodo and the lesser-known gems of Alor, Halmahera and more, my journey has taken me deep into the heart of the Coral Triangle. With hundreds of dives across the archipelago, I’ve seen both the thriving biodiversity and the urgent threats facing these ecosystems. I write to share the greatness of Indonesia’s underwater world, to highlight what’s at stake, and to inspire others to protect it. Every dive deepens my respect for these oceans, and my responsibility to speak up for them.
