Neptunes Sea Fan dive site (Sometimes also called Neptunes Fantasea dive site) located in the narrow passage between Walib and Wayilbatan Islands, in the Missol region of Raja Ampat. This site is known for Unbelievable Sea Fans, some growing all the way up walls from 28 meters to the surface.
The site is famous for its extensive forests of sea fans (gorgonians) that grow on the sloping reef and walls. These intricate coral structures create a dramatic underwater landscape that houses an astonishing number of species, including some that are rare and endangered. And no wonder; the reef populated by hard and soft corals that forms a vibrant colour and texture mosaic is almost a sure bet for divers to see the following sea creatures that make the reef their home.
Visibility is great at over 25 meters and currents are pretty mild, so this site is suitable for both intermediate and well as more advanced divers.
Neptune’s Fan Sea is home to an impressive array of marine life, complemented by the stunning visual formations of sea fans. This dive site is well-suited for all sorts of photographers, and if you’re looking to capture macro shots of marine critters, you should definitely put this location on your shortlist.
An assortment of damselfish, anthias, and butterflyfish whirl among the coral bommies in the shallow parts of the reef. Here, divers may encounter a variety of large and small marine life in and around the stunning variety of corals.
Mid-depth divers often find themselves surrounded by schools of fusiliers, jacks, and the occasional blacktip reef shark. But there’s something for everyone, even the smallest of critters—nudibranchs, shrimp, and ghost pipefish and pygmy seahorses that call the reef home.
An interesting contrast is presented by the sandy bottom, which is home to garden eels and resting stingrays.
The dive site is also a splendid place for a snorkel, with the reef likely to leave you breathless—not just from the exertion but also from the sheer beauty and liveliness of the underwater world.
To dive the site, we choose whichever end of the passage that the current is pushing from on the day and ride with the current.
Whichever end we start from, each end has some great features that are worth checking out. The southern end is scattered with impressive coral bommies, while the north end has a nice ridge to check out.
Steep walls on this site extend all the way up to 5 meters from the surface, and this is where you find the most beautiful sea fans. The fringing top reef at 5 meters also makes a great place to do aa safety stop at the end of the dive.
